The Idea

How do we improve health literacy in our community? Nearly 9 out of 10 adults may lack the skills needed to manage their health and prevent disease. This leads to poorer health outcomes and higher healthcare costs, to the tune, believe it or not, of $106 - $238 billion annually!

The Specifics

We want ideas for how to impact health literacy in our community. The Grillo Health Information Center is implementing one approach. Trained volunteer researchers guide health consumers to: 1) seek, obtain and utilize reliable health information, and 2) become pro-active in their own health management practices. Almost half of those consumers who responded to a follow-up survey say they have made lifestyle changes that improved their health. Each small step can reduce skyrocketing health care costs. Let us know your ideas to improve health literacy.

Is the Grillo Health Center looking to find new approaches that you might want to implement? Or would you want idea submitters to implement their ideas in their own local communities?

Great question! Actually both! We want to find new approaches to implement within the network where our strong reputation and credibility has grown over the last decade, and, we know other local communities can benefit from this model and by simply focusing on improving health literacy. Go for it! And we are happy to help other communities based on our experiences.
