How do we improve health literacy in our community? Nearly 9 out of 10 adults may lack the skills needed to manage their health and prevent disease. This leads to poorer health outcomes and higher healthcare costs, to the tune, believe it or not, of $106 - $238 billion annually!
We want ideas for how to impact health literacy in our community. The Grillo Health Information Center is implementing one approach. Trained volunteer researchers guide health consumers to: 1) seek, obtain and utilize reliable health information, and 2) become pro-active in their own health management practices. Almost half of those consumers who responded to a follow-up survey say they have made lifestyle changes that improved their health. Each small step can reduce skyrocketing health care costs. Let us know your ideas to improve health literacy.
